Peri-What? Live Broadcasting and Your Online Presence

periscope-5-things-blog

If you haven’t already heard about Periscope, you’re probably about to hear the name more and more. Periscope is Twitter’s live streaming app for iPhone and Android that is really heating up for small biz right now. Its tagline is Explore the world through someone else’s eyes and it allows you to connect with your audience in a very “real” and casual kinda way. What better way to convince people to know, like & trust you than to give them the opportunity to interact with you LIVE and IN PERSON (well…via video)?

There are 5 things I’ve learned so far about ‘scoping (both as a viewer and a broadcaster) that I want to share with you:

I’m Officially In Love! – Friends+Me

FriendsMeLogoUpdate 9/1/17: Since the publication of this article, Buffer has added Google+ Profiles to their lineup of included platforms. Since I use Buffer for many of my other social media channels, I have personally switched to Buffer for scheduling my Google+ posts as well.

Why, oh WHY couldn’t I have found this amazing tool sooner?!?!? Apparently, it’s been kicking around for a few years and I just recently learned about it! For some time, DoShare was the only social media scheduling tool that I knew of that allowed third-party scheduled posts to PROFILES on Google+ (there are many that allow you to schedule content for Google+ PAGES). Google+ recently updated their API policy/functionality and DoShare did not update their programming to comply. This made it impossible to attach images to my posts. *pout* Talk about throwing a serious wrench in my social media marketing strategy! Visual Content is KING, after all!  I found an article online that recommended BuzzBundle, but that doesn’t handle posting images, either. *double pout*

Have You Hugged Your Inner Rock Star Lately?

web-chick-rock-star_webMy clients tell me I’m a rock star. Well, I don’t know if all that’s true, but I sure felt like one the other day. I discovered, quite by chance, that all but two of the comments I’d collected on my blog for the past few years were GONE. I don’t know how it happened, I don’t know when it happened, but it happened. And I was devastated.

I knew I had a backup but I didn’t want to restore the ENTIRE website, just the comments.  So I contacted my host through live chat.  They asked if I’d tried disabling all my plugins to see if the comments would come back, ’cause you know that’s the first thing they always tell you to try (it’s like the computer tech support guy asking you if your computer is plugged in and the power is on). So I go into the database area and look at the table; sure enough, TWO lonely little comments in the table, meaning it’s not that they’re there and not displaying.  They are GONE, KAPUT, POOF.  THEY HAVE CEASED TO EXIST.

Your Site Tested ‘Not Mobile-Friendly’. Now What?!?!

As you may have heard, Google is changing its algorithm again.  It’s not to drive website owners crazy, I promise! It’s because Google wants its users to receive the most relevant and timely results from their searches, regardless of whether they’re on a mobile or a desktop device. With that in mind, Google will be placing more weight on mobile-friendliness as a ranking factor in mobile search results starting April 21st.

Not sure whether your site is mobile-friendly? Use this handy dandy testing tool to find out. If your test comes back ‘mobile-friendly’, WOOHOO!  If your test comes back ‘Not mobile-friendly’, don’t panic just yet. You have options.

Small Biz Celebrity: Judy Schoeffling Morris

SBC-logoIt’s my pleasure to introduce a new feature here at Your Web Chick, a spotlight on small business owners and their online presence. I like to call it ‘Small Biz Celebrity’.

Tell me a little about you and your background. I’m an artist at my core. I was an art major. I had exhibited and sold my art from the age of 12 until I was 21. From the time I was in second grade, I knew what I wanted to do with my life and I had a plan. That plan changed when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 22. I was lucky to survive, but I was considered permanently disabled. That did not sit well with me, the person who had always done everything for myself, including earning my own income since I was a kid! (I started cleaning houses for elderly women when I was 10 or 11, and had quite a following based on word-of-mouth. I also baby sat, raked lawns, shoveled snow in the winter…anything I could do to make an honest buck.)
